Figures show the increase in the sector's share of GDP and are in unison with producers:
78% of managers maintain investment plans during pandemic, says research
The numbers speak for themselves: the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the year ended 2020 with a record expansion of 24.31%, compared to 2019.
artistic, creative and entertainment activities; air, interstate and intercity rail transport; accommodation services; manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies; fabrics, haberdashery, clothing and footwear; private education; telecommunications; metallurgy and some other sectors of great economic representation figure in the list of sectors most affected by the pandemic in Brazil, according to the Ministry of Economy, in an ordinance published at the end of last year. Agribusiness, however, continues to stand out in this list and, despite difficulties in the face of the pandemic scenario, it continues to stand out in the economy and in production.
The numbers speak for themselves: the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the year ended 2020 with a record expansion of 24.31%, compared to 2019. As a result, agribusiness expanded its share of the country's total GDP to 26.6% last year. In 2019, this percentage was 20.5%. Despite narrow margins due to production costs, all segments of the Brazilian agribusiness production chain in general had a high in the last year - already going through the pandemic - both the agricultural (24.2%) and the livestock (24.56%) production chain had significant expansion, according to data from the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) and the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea).
This finding in numbers was also presented in the form of rural producer's voice: 64% of rural producers felt low impact of the pandemic on their business. As a result, 86% of them have not made any changes in the management of their properties and 78% maintain investment plans during the health crisis. The pandemic has an average impact in the field for 11% of rural producers and high for 25% of them. This was what the 8th survey on Rural Producer's Habits, carried out by the Brazilian Association of Rural Marketing (ABMRA), revealed.
Small, medium and large producers were interviewed in person between October 2020 and January 2021, among men and women responsible for the decision to purchase and use inputs, machinery and various implements on the properties. Each form contained 273 questions to the producer. In total, there were 4,500 hours of questioning.
In all, 2,310 interviews with farmers – involving the planting of sugarcane, soy, corn and others – from different regions of the country, in 16 states, are recorded. In agriculture, there were 738 interviews (sample error rate of 3%, which means a reliability level of 90%). Specifically per animal, there were 366 interviews in beef cattle, 134 in dairy farming, 110 in poultry and 128 in swine. Likewise, in several regions of the country, highlighting the States of the Southern Region, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Goiás.
In addition to revealing the strength of the sector in terms of sector numbers and the perceptions of producers regarding their business, even in a chaotic scenario of sanitary crisis of global proportions, all the work in the field had a positive impact on the urban vision. The research presented by ABMRA reveals that, with the pandemic, the perception is that the image of the rural producer has improved in urban centers. Prior to the covid-19 period, 31% considered this view of the field to be good or excellent; while 69% believed in fair or bad. After the advent of the covid-19 situation, 46% believes the image is good or excellent, while 54% believes it to be between fair and terrible.
Among the various findings, the maxim is that voices and numbers add up to further strengthen the representativeness of the sector, which continues to be the foundation of the country.
